Drama Ambassador - Jay Laga’aia

Jay Laga'aia is The Arts Unit's Drama Ambassador

'The Arts Unit Drama programs are a vital learning tool for the development of all our kids, whether they want to go into a performance based career or not. It teaches them to be confident and to be aware of not only themselves but everyone around them. It allows kids to risk in a safe and encouraging environment, where failure is analysed and not personalised. It gives our kids a voice and it allows them to play.'

Jay Laga'aia is one of Australia's best known actors, having worked in the performing arts for over 30 years. He writes:Jay Laga'aia

'I have experienced many highlights in my career. Playing the lead (Mufasa) In the Disney musical The Lion King. Being a presenter on Playschool for over 15 years. Being a recording artist for ABC Music and working on many dramas both in this country and in NZ. Writing and composing the music for a new children’s TV show for Channel 7. Having my children follow in my footsteps. My biggest highlight was watching both my sons performing in the 2014 Schools Spectacular in front of thousands of people. It is only then you realise that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

My vision would be to make Drama relevant and accessible to the everyday Australian and to make our young people understand that failure is something to be embraced because ultimately, our failures guide us to our successes. To encourage students to realise their dreams and potential and most importantly to create an atmosphere of community, where we all help each other achieve our individual and collective goals.'
